'Chameleon Guitar' blends old-world and high-tech (MIT)
Natural wood, with its unique grain patterns, is what gives traditional
acoustic instruments warm and distinctive sounds, while the power of modern
electronic processing provides an unlimited degree of control to manipulate
the characteristics of an instrument's sound. Now, a guitar built by a student
at MIT's Media Lab promises to provide the best of both worlds.
The Chameleon Guitar — so named for its ability to mimic different instruments
— is an electric guitar whose body has a separate central section that is
removable. This inserted section, the soundboard, can be switched with one
made of a different kind of wood, or with a different structural support
system, or with one made of a different material altogether. Then, the sound
generated by the electronic pickups on that board can be manipulated by a
computer to produce the effect of a different size or shape of the resonating
chamber.
Its creator, Media Lab master's student Amit Zoran, explains that each piece
of wood is unique and will behave in a different way when it is part of an
instrument and begins to vibrate in response to the strings attached to it.
Computers can't model all the ...

My Top Five Stratocaster Players Of All Time by Eduardo Munroe
There have been countless great guitarists throughout the years who've made the Fender Stratocaster their electric guitar of choice. Some like Eric Clapton even defected from a hallowed 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard to play the Strat.
The Stratocaster has been used in every kind of music you can possibly imagine, from funk to rock and roll. So who are the best guitarists to use the single coil pickup tones of the Strat? Well of course this is a really personal thing as precisely what tickles one guitarists fancy, might not another. Even so, for a bit of fun I have come up with a list of my personal top 5 Stratocaster users from over time:
5. Coming in at number five in my list is the great Rory Gallagher, the gritty Irish player with the most tatty looking Strat you've ever seen. Rory was adored by numerous people for his no nonsense raw, bluesy rock. He was superb as a live performer and was an incredibly down to earth kind of bloke.
4. At number 4 on my list is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Well-known for his amazing blues playing and classic Strat tones, Stevie Ray had a huge fan base who worshipped every lick he performed. I was lucky enough to see him play live at a modest London gig in Shepherds Bush and he was just amazing. He put every ounce of energy into his performance and blew everyone away with his melodic blues playing. He constantly got the type of blues sounds from his Strat pickups that could drive a guitarist crazy with envy.
3. At 3 we have Dave Gilmour of the legendary Pink Floyd. Anyone who has witnessed the classy, melodic guitar playing of this man on songs like 'Comfortably Numb' know why he deserves a 5 top placing. Not only has his guitar guitar playing inspired a generation but he seems to be a remarkably modest and decent person.
2. How can I not include Jimi Hendrix. The innovator and showman who in my opinion made the Strat more famous compared to any other guitar player. It's easy for those who don't really know his playing to label him as an untamed, crazy, loud player - just let them listen to 'Little Wing' to understand that there is a whole lot more to this particular guy's guitar playing.
1. Well, my number 1 choice of Stratocaster guitar players may surprise some but it is the amazing Jeff Beck. Beck seems to develop and improve like no other player. He ventures into areas of musicianship that most other players choose to avoid, picking out the safer area of rock or blues. He is melodic beyond belief and plays a Strat like it is really an extension of| his body. His remarkable use of the tremolo bar is definitely for the good of the music, never for the sake of gimmick or showmanship. Jeff Beck plays notes on the fretboard that many other guitarists would not even think about. He pushes the barriers and makes use of his Strat to help him do it.
So there you have it. No Clapton, no Hank Marvin and no Mark Knopfler. Well, just like I said, you'll have to forgive me as it is a very personalised thing.
The author has been playing both electric and acoustic guitars for a number of years and enjoys many different styles of music. He is also a keen builder of guitars and highly recommends Tub Guitar Pickups for excellent replacement Stratocaster pickups and humbucking pickups
