Why Do Some Guitar Pickups Sound Great And Others Sound Dull? by Todd Witzken
Let's start off by stating that what is regarded a good guitar pickup by one guitarist might not be considered nice by another. This is all about the search for the best tone and everybody has a totally different opinion of what the right tone is.
A well constructed pickup is just like a fine meal. It's the combination of many different ingredients blended together to complete the magic recipe. Too much garlic or the wrong temperature and your meal can be poor, badly applied coil windings or incorrect magnets (to name just two ingredients) and it's goodbye to your pickup's tone. There are various aspects that need to all come together and the various guitar pickup manufacturers seem to have their unique take on it.
It's not simple to get that indefinable 'special' tone. Even the much sort after Gibson PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker pickups of the late 50's were not all great. The good examples from that era are almost certainly the best sounding pickups you'll ever hear, but there were definitely some duds from that period. This waywardness was largely due to the hand built nature of these products, with stories of some workers in the Gibson factory going off for a coffee and leaving the winder on for just a bit too long.
Listed below are some of the factors that will play a crucial part in the overall result of a guitar pickup build:
1. The general build quality. The taping, soldering and general putting together of all the components.
2. The winding of the coils. The tension, pattern, number of turns, whether it is scatter wound (some guitarists prefer this to the more uniform machine winding) and the type of wire.
3. The quality of the materials used including the screws, magnets, bobbins etc.
4. Whether the pickups are wax potted. This is the process of sealing a pickup in a wax and paraffin mix to stop any microphonic squealing through the amp. Some people say that a really great pickup doesn't need wax potting, in fact the old 50's humbuckers were not potted, but in reality most need it.
5. The balancing act between the various components. For example the different alnico and ceramic magnets balanced with the number of coil winds is a crucial juggling act.
The other consideration is of course your style of playing. For example a jazz player may well prefer a more mellow sound with lower output and maybe an Alnico 4 magnet. Alternatively a rocker could well be looking for much higher output centered around a ceramic magnet.
