Do You Want To Learn Authentic Blues Guitar - What Does That Mean ? by Jim Bruce
Son House once quipped that a lot of people " ... make up some kinda shuffle in A and say it's the blues - well it ain't !" When somebody inquired "What are the blues?", Big Bill Broonzy replied "If you have to ask you'll never know". How did the legendary blues men produce that wonderful music? How can you learn authentic acoustic blues guitar - 'the real deal' ? In this piece I examine some classic blues musicians styles and how you can approach these picking techniques.
Blues And Ragtime - Back To The Roots - Blind Blake
I always thought it a little strange that there exists only one photo of Blind Blake, the King of Ragtime Blues Guitar. He made over 100 recordings for Paramount in his playing life and was reportedly really very popular. It seems logical to me that other photographs must have been taken? Even legendary Robert Johnson had two photographs taken and , at that time, he was less well known and famous than Blake.
Ry cooder says he thought Blake played guitar using a light feel, while other sources maintain that he developed a hole in his right thumb, meaning that he had a heavy touch. On some of his songs he exclaims 'boot that thing' - which also indicated that he might have had a heavy touch. I've experimented performing Blake lots of ways, employing a lightand heavy approach on different gauge strings, adjusting the height of the guitar bridge accordngly. It's incredibly difficult to reproduce the bouncy feel of many of his ragtime tunes in G, such as That'll Never Happen No More and Too Tight Blues.
You Can't Have Too Much Big Bill!
Take Big Bill Broonzy's music, as an example - it's fairly simple to work out where our fretting and picking fingers should position themselves, but that very infectious swinging tempo is something else entirely! It's very nearly magical. Here's a quote from Broonzy talking about timing - " you can either ride on the front of the hoss, or the back of it and that's what happens when I play guitar". The picking thumb rhythm stays a bit behind the beat and makes the swing. Easy to say, but attempt to play it! Incredibly, he's utilizing just one finger on the treble strings to create some syncopation.
How Do We Begin To Play Blues Guitar ?
The answer is always 'from someone who can play it like it was played'. There is a great amount of guitar courses offered on the internet, with many styles and price tags. Some can be found for free! (A word of warning here - generally in life, you get what you pay for.) Very frequently, the courses on offer don't match up to their advertising. Some times, for example, the picking doesn't even match the tab! Some courses teach licks or tips to give your playing a 'bluesy feel', but is it the blues?
Find a guitarist who can play like the old guys. Ask around in your local area, or search the internet. After you've found this guitarist, ask him for lessons. If he doesn't give lessons then listen to his music and follow him around, if there's nothing else for it. Like most things in this life, if you want it, you have to go for it. Most real blues men are not interested in charging a fortune for their tuition.
Try not to listen to lots of modern blues guitar players . The styles can become weakened and changed too much, particularly the timing and syncopation. Listen to as many classic blues guitar recordings as you can, specially if there is film of the guy performing . For example, you get an awful lot from just seeing Big Bill Broonzy perform Hey Hey repeatedly.
Practice, practice, practice - specially the basic picking patterns. Control the movements of that right hand thumb! Try one hour early morning and then again in the evening is the very minimum. You don't suppose Robert Johnson sold his spirit to the Devil do you? Of course not, but like Eric Clapton, he took himself away for a year until he could play with the dexterity we can evidently hear from his old tracks.
As far as I'm concerned this is essential - when you are playing guitar , BE that song or that person who sang the original. The lives of these men were hard and completely unlike ours. That said, we all get the blues now and again and that's how we can associate ourselves with these men. The blues is any of these things - a woman, having no job, bad kids, rainy weather, mortality and hundreds of other things. Bring it to life it through your fingers.
Get the techniques first, don't take shortcuts with the basic building blocks and finally, put everything you've got into the music.
