Isle Of Wight Festival returns at Seaclose Park by Sold-Out-Ticket-Market
The Isle of Wight Festival is a music festival which takes place every year on the Isle of Wight in the UK. It was originally held from 1968 to 1970. These original events were promoted and organised by the Foulk brothers: Ron, Ray and Bill Foulk, under the banner of their company Fiery Creations Limited. The venues were Ford Farm, Wootton and Afton Down respectively.
The 1969 event was notable for the appearance of Bob Dylan and the Band. Followers from across the world trecked to the Isle of Wight for what seemed like a 'second coming'. Estimates of 150,000â250,000 attended. The 1969 festival opened on Friday 29 Augustâ"eleven days after the close of Woodstock.
The 1970 event was by far the largest and most famous of these early festivals; indeed it was said at the time to be one of the largest human gatherings in the world, with estimates of over 600,000, surpassing the attendance at Woodstock. Included in the line-up of over fifty performers were The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Doors, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Melanie, Donovan, Free, Chicago, Richie Havens, John Sebastian, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, Taste and Tiny Tim. The 1970 festival was filmed by a 35mm film crew under the direction of future Academy Award-winning director Murray Lerner who at that point had just directed the Academy Award-nominated documentary Festival of the Newport Folk Festival.
The Isle of Wight event was revived in 2002 at Seaclose Park, a recreation ground on the outskirts of Newport. Isle Of Wight has been held annually since that year, progressively extending itself northwards beyond Seaclose Park along the fields of the eastern Medina valley. The event had a capacity of 22,000, however only around 8 to 10,000 attended. Many notable artists have performed since its revival including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Muse, Stereophonics, Donovan, Ray Davies, Robert Plant, David Bowie, Manic Street Preachers, The Who, R.E.M., Coldplay, The Proclaimers, Bryan Adams and The Police. The main stage line up was as follows: The Charlatans, Robert Plant, Starsailor, Ash,
The Coral, The Bees, DNA Doll, Johnny 4, Neglected Youth.
Isle Of Wight 2003 and 2004 was held on 14â15 June 2003 and 11â13 June 2004 respectively. The headling acts for 2003 were: Paul Weller, Starsailor, ryan Adams, Counting Crows and for 2004 were: Stereophonics, Groove, The Who, Manic Street Preachers, David Bowie, The Charlatans. The The attendance of Isle Of Wight 2005 festival was around 50,000, a 15,000 and in 2006, it was around 55,000. The Isle Of Wight festival won the "Best Major Festival" award at the 2007 UK Festival Awards in London in November 2007. The Isle Of Wight Festival again rocks the UK in 2008 and 2009. 2008 was the first time that the festival was screened live on TV. The headline acts in 2010 were Jay-Z, Florence and the Machine, The Strokes, Blondie, Paul McCartney, Pink.
The Isle of Wight 2011 will be the tenth revived Isle of Wight Festival to be held at Seaclose Park in Newport on the Isle of Wight. The event will run from the 10-12th June 2011. The 2011 event will be the first under a ten-year deal between the Isle of Wight Council and the promotors Solos
