Which is a better upgrade in a Bass Guitar: Preamp or Pickups first.?
I am looking at the Bartolini NTBT 3.3. Right now I have the stock Ibanez EQB2C Preamp and stock DX5 pickups. This system is active.
Well it depends if you are going to be playing alot of bars or clubs..or just going to use the bass to record and play at home..I have been a musician playing clubs for almost 15 years. And the one problem i have found with Bartolini pick-ups that are active is they hummm 60 cycle buzz if you know what i'm talking about that's because of the fridges and air conditioners in the clubs and bars..I would go with a set of EMG pick-ups passive with a good Boss Bass pre-amp processor..the Boss BE-5 is a great porcessor that has some really nice compressors built into it ..i have a Stewart Spectar Bass..original not the Washburn line..Made of Brazilian Orange wood and i use a 2x10 over 4x10 cab with a SWR Head..and with the boss processor i get a really good smooth bass sound..
when to use an impedance converter?
when connecting an acoustic guitar with an active preamp to a PA system, would an impedance converter be needed to send a strong enough signal to the mixer?
These days, most amps (solid-state) are high enough impedance that you don't need a convertor. If the input is low impedance (as with some tube amps), the driving signal may not be strong enough. If the amp's input impedance is 10K ohms or higher, you're good to go.
