looking for alto saxophone?
Hey all, I'm looking for advice on an alto saxophone. I used to play as a young one, so I'm not inexperienced but I'd still be a beginner, but I want something affordable I can take to intermediate level.
Melbourne's full of standard-level Yamaha and Jupiters, and they seem reliable, but would I be better off looking at other makes for the same price?
I'm also looking at older saxophones, having heard good things about Conn and Buescher vintages. Any advice I could get on these and other makes would be appreciated.
Yamaha's saxophones are very durable and they are not a bad choice, but often the prices are very high purely because of the name.
Since you have experience, the new selmer saxophones come with extra keys that numerous other brands do not. This will allow you to expand your range.
Conn Is a good brand, but is predominantly a brass maker. I'd recommend it if your were buying a trombone, but I personally do not like the way a Conn alto feels.
If you go to a music shop, test the brands and see what you like the feel of. Stay away from eBay if you can
What Is this alto saxophone worth?
I found a silver alto saxophone and on the bell it says C.G.CONN-LTD ELKHART-IND USA. And on the back it says patten dec 8 1914 1119954 and the serial number is set up just like this

How much do you thing thia is worth or when it was made?
It is in a crocodile skin leather case. REAL SKIN!! It has one tiny dent on the bell, as for the keys springs and pads they are in perfect condition.
This information seems somewhat inconsistent. John A's assertion that horns with prefix "M" were made in 1969 is true, but those horns were made in Nogales- not Elkhart. I've never seen any horn made in Nogales with a satin (silver-esque) finish or a crocodile skin case (although the latter could be an aftermarket acquisition).
Based on your data. moviemaker 1996, and information from http://www.speakeasy.org/~granlund/sax-serials.html , it appears your horn is a transitional 6M from 1931. Does this horn have rolled tone holes? That would be the clincher. According to the value guide charts on www.saxgourmet.com this horn is worth over $2000 in great shape.
