Do You Really Need A Two Thousand Dollar Guitar To Play Blues? by Jim Bruce
It's always common for people to say that the make of acoustic guitar guitarists uses to pick blues music is really crucial to the sound. Whenever I've performed well for an audience, or upload a clip to my Youtube Channel, I always have comments such as "nice performance - what kind of box do you use?"
This prompts a pertinent question - how vital is the guitar to a guitarist's sound? It should seem obvious, the make of guitar isn't the most critical component, but plays a major part. When inquired what kind of instrument he best performed with, Muddy Waters retorted "Doesn't matter at all - just pass me some old guitar and I'll have you crying!"
One can find wonderful videos on Youtube showcasing classic blues players giving stunning renditions using just run of the mill instruments, like Mance Lipscomb playing a cheap Eko guitar. It almost goes without saying that when the old blues men were beginning to play,they didn't have the money to lay out on expensive instrument, and they perhaps used a cheap Stellar,purchased from Sears (like Elizabeth Cotton) or a used instrument shop. My own favorite instrument when I was beginning to play for people was a 000 body size Yamaha acoustic constructed with laminated wood. It was loud and efficient, which was exactly what I was looking for.
But of course the manufacture of the guitar has an impact?
Of course it does, and you need to quantify the value of that difference in your case. The difference in quality of sound when comparing a $150 guitar and another priced at $1000 is not too great these days, particularly in view of the cheap, excellent quality instruments created in China. ignoring the difference in the quality of sound, the bigger component is ease of playing.The expensive hand-crafted modes are great to handle. You can do the same thing with the cheaper guitar, but it will take more application. As well as this, generally the sustain and harmonic content of the notes using the less expensive models is not as good. Gently strike a bass string of a high end Martin and hear what I mean. It seems to go on for ever!
Which Instrument To Buy?
Of course, some styles are more suited for a particular style of performance, together with action adjustment and what kind/size of string to use. A large body Gibson has sonorous bass sounds and projects the sound far and wide - superb for picking with the fingers using plastic and metal picks, strumming or using a plectrum. Ragtime style players tended to play guitars with small bodies, like the Stellar or Gibson parlor model.
Parlor guitars are starting to be offered again and are becoming sought after. While not strictly parlor type, the body size designated 000 is becoming the type of standard kit for performing acoustic blues, like the Martin 000 28EC.
Depends On How You Play.
Do you play gently or using a strong touch? This is also an important factor in your choice of guitar. Some instruments don't take kindly to being hit hard, but others love it! In the best instance, the very best instruments(which tend to be the high cost items) will play happily with many styles of playing. My advice for guitar searchers is 'go out and try them!'
It doesn't always follow that the high dollar guitar is obviously better either. A few time ago, Gretsch produced a series of instruments known as the 'Americana' Series ,and they cost around $95 when brand new. The four guitars in the series were in different colors and were covered in pictures, such as cowboys, cattle and flying saucers! Even though manufactured as a novelty item, these small guitars turned out to be very good (they were manufactured by Gretsch after all) with solid wood construction and quality top. These guitars are not manufactured nowadays, and it's difficult to acquire one - just one example of less expensive being excellent value.
